Professional background

Professor Huiling Duan is Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Boya Chair Professor, Founding Director of Faculty of Engineering, and Dean of College of Engineering at Peking University.
Professor Huiling Duan received Ph.D. degree from Peking University in 2005. She then held a Royal Society of London Post-doctoral Fellowship at Cardiff University (2005-2006) and an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany (2006-2007). After that she took the Associate Professor position at College of Engineering of Peking University. In 2012, she was awarded the Distinguished Young Scholar of National Natural Science Foundation of China. In 2014, she was honored with the Chang Jiang Scholar Chair Professorship by the Ministry of Education of China, and she took this professorship in January 2015.
From 2013 to 2018, Professor Duan served as Chair of the Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science, later becoming Associate Dean and then Executive Dean of College of Engineering of Peking University (2018-2019). Since January 2020, she has been serving as Dean until now. In 2025, the Faculty of Engineering (includes one college and five schools) was established in Peking University, and she serves as the Founding Director. She was elected Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2020, and Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2023.
Professor Duan serves on several committees both in China and oversea countries, including IUTAM Symposia Panel for Solid Mechanics, Executive Committee of Global Engineering Deans Council, Steering Committee of Asian Engineering Deans Summit, Vice President of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM), Standing Committee of Chinese Society of Composites, ASME Mechanical Engineering Department Heads/Chairs Executive Committee (2017 - 2019 Members at Large). She also serves as the editorial board member of several peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, Research, MRS Bulletin, Advanced Intelligent Discovery, Droplet, Engineering Computations, Acta Mechanica Sinica, etc. She was an associate editor of the Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology of ASME for 6 years (2015-2021).
